Analysis of the Situation in the Auto Market of Uzbekistan: September 2024

The Center for Economic Research and Reforms of Uzbekistan presents the results of an analysis of the state of the automotive market for September 2024.

In September 2024, total sales of motor vehicles in Uzbekistan amounted to 110.1 thousand units, which is 1.1% lower compared to the previous month. A more noticeable decrease in activity is observed in annual terms by 25.5%.

The situation in the passenger car segment

In September, sales of passenger cars decreased slightly by 0.3% and amounted to 101.6 thousand units.

Year-on-year, there is a more pronounced decrease: sales of passenger cars decreased by 25.5%.

Sales of passenger cars in the regional context show that in September the largest decrease was noted in Andijan (by 9.1%), Kashkadarya (by 7.9%) and Tashkent (by 7.7%) regions.

In the Q3 2024, car sales amounted to 295.6 thousand, with an annual decrease of 26.8% over the same period.

The situation in the primary car market

In the primary passenger car market, sales increased by 10.3% compared to the previous month, which is almost 3.8 thousand cars more than a month earlier. In annual terms, activity is stabilizing, if in August the sales decline was at the level of 1%, then in September there was an increase of 7.7%.

Sales of new cars of domestic production continue to grow. In September, sales increased by 10.8%, amounting to 37.6 thousand cars. In annual terms, the growth was 12%.

The segment of passenger cars is growing

The market of foreign passenger cars in the Uzbek market continued to grow. While in August sales in this segment increased by 25.6%, in September growth slowed to 4.5%, amounting to 3.3 thousand units.

The secondary market of passenger cars

The situation in the secondary passenger car market demonstrates a slowdown in sales growth and maintains a more pronounced trend of an annual decline in sales volumes.

In particular, in September, activity in the secondary passenger car market decreased by 6.3% compared to the previous month. During the reporting period, 60.5 thousand cars were sold in this segment. Overall, sales decreased by 38.4% over the year.

The situation on the electric vehicle market

The segment of passenger electric vehicles is showing an increase in activity. The volume of sales amounted to a record growth of 2.4 times, which is the largest increase over the entire observation period. In September, 4.24 thousand electric cars were sold, while in August 1.7 thousand units were sold.

In the regional context, the largest sales growth was recorded in Tashkent (3180 units), Tashkent (285 units) and Andijan (119 units) regions.

On an annual basis, sales of electric vehicles increased by almost 17%.

In the Q3 2024, sales of passenger electric vehicles amounted to 9.3 thousand, a decrease of 5.6% compared to the same period last year.
