President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, at the invitation of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, flew to Astana on July 3 this year to participate in the next meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and a meeting in the SCO+ format.

The agenda of the summit included topical issues of further development of multifaceted cooperation within the SCO and improvement of the organization's activities. The problems of international and regional cooperation will also be considered.

Following the meeting, it is planned to adopt the Astana Declaration and a package of documents on expanding partnership in the fields of economy, security, ecology, energy, tourism and many other areas.

Trade and economic cooperation

The SCO countries, in particular Russia, China and the countries of Central Asia, are among the main trade and economic partners of Uzbekistan.

Over the period 2017-2023, Uzbekistan's trade turnover with the SCO countries increased 2.5 times, exports 1.5 times, imports 3.3 times. At the same time, the share of trade turnover with the SCO countries in the total foreign trade turnover of the country also increased from 47.2% to 50.1%.

In 2023, the SCO countries accounted for 50.1% ($31.36 billion) of the total foreign trade turnover of Uzbekistan, 36.6% ($8.9 billion) of total exports and 58.8% ($22.4 billion) of the total volume of imports.

Excluding gold ($8.15 billion in 2023) in the total volume of exports that are supplied to other countries, the share of the SCO countries in Uzbekistan's total exports will be 55%.

In 2023, compared with 2022, Uzbekistan's trade turnover with the SCO countries increased by 18.5% to $31,36 billion, exports decreased by 1.3% to $8,9 billion, imports increased by 28.9% to $22,4 billion.

The largest share in Uzbekistan's foreign trade with the SCO countries in 2023 was occupied by:

  • in trade turnover: China – $13,7 billion (43.8%), Russia – $9,9 billion (31.5%), Kazakhstan – $4,4 billion (14.0%);
  • in exports: Russia – $3,2 billion (37.0%), China – $2,5 billion (27.5%), Kazakhstan – $1,4 billion (15.4%), Kyrgyzstan – $631.5 million (7.1%), Tajikistan – $605.0 million (6.8%);
  • in imports: China – $11,3 billion (50.2%), Russia – $6,6 billion (29.3%), Kazakhstan – $3 billion (13.5%).

It should be noted that the markets of the SCO countries are the main consumers of Uzbekistan's finished export products.

For example, about 80-90% of all fruit and vegetable and other food products exported by Uzbekistan, electrical goods, as well as textile and automotive products are supplied to the SCO countries.

In turn, Uzbekistan imports from the SCO member states products and raw materials important for economic development, which are necessary for the operation of manufacturing enterprises, as well as to meet consumer demand in the domestic market.

In particular, the bulk of metal products, wood and petroleum products come from the SCO countries. In addition, more than 50% of imported machinery and equipment, including components for the production of finished products, come from the SCO countries.

The SCO countries play a key role in ensuring Uzbekistan's food security (about 70% of total food imports come from the SCO countries, in particular, the bulk of vegetable oil and grain products are supplied from Russia and Kazakhstan).
