In February, the business activity index in Uzbekistan increased by 2.7%

In February 2023, the Business Activity Index (BAI), calculated by the Center for Economic Research and Reforms, amounted to 1027 points, and compared to the previous month, it increased by 2.7%. And there is also a 4 percent increase in BAI compared to the same period last year.

The following changes were observed in the BAI components

The Business Activity Index in February 2023 increased by 2.7% compared to the previous month and amounted to 1027 points, which is explained by changes in the following components:

  • the number of transactions on bank accounts of business entities increased by 12,3%;
  • the component of operating business entities decreased by 11,7%;
  • the intensity of the purchase of raw materials on the commodity exchange increased by 4,7%;
  • the component of trademarks decreased by 30,6%.

In the regional context, the Surkhandarya region showed the highest growth

In February 2023, the Business Activity Index for 11 regions increased compared to the previous month. Significant growth was observed in the Surkhandarya (47.1%), Bukhara (44.9%), Kashkadarya (26.3%), Jizzakh (25.1%), Navoi (18.8%) and Namangan (15.9%) regions (Fig.2).

At the same time, this index for 3 regions decreased. In particular, in the Republic of Karakalpakstan (-8.1%) and in the Tashkent (-1.7%) and Syrdarya (-0.9%) regions, there was a decline compared to the previous month.

TRANSACTIONS WITH BANK ACCOUNTS

The number of interbank payment transactions in February 2023 amounted to 5,320.8 thousand and significantly increased by 583.1 thousand transactions (an increase of 12.3%), compared with January 2022.

The number of banking transactions in all regions increased.

In February, the number of banking transactions between legal entities increased in all 14 regions compared to the previous month. In particular, the most significant increase was observed in Andijan (+32.0%), Samarkand (+24.4%), Navoi (+24.3%), Kashkadarya (+19.4%) and Surkhandarya (+18.6%) regions.

ACTIVITY ON THE COMMODITY EXCHANGE

The component of operating business entities in February amounted to 1.0470, which means an increase in the component by 4.7% compared to the level of the previous month, which is due to an increase in the number of transactions by 11.5%.

At the UzEx, the total turnover in February amounted to 6,496.5 billion sums, which is 4.7% more than in the previous month.

ACTIVITY OF ECONOMIC ENTITIES

The component of operating business entities in February amounted to 0.8827, which means a decline in the component by 11.7% compared to the level of the previous month. At the same time, this indicator has a negative value in relation to the same period last year with a significant decrease of 19.2%.

The number of operating business entities in February significantly decreased by 92,795 units compared to January 2023 (613,391 units) and amounted to 520,596 units.

The number of large enterprises has significantly decreased by 63 units.

During the reporting period, the number of small enterprises decreased from 503,804 to 429,031 units (a decline of 74,773 units). Also, the number of farms decreased from 105,948 to 87,989 units (a decline of 17,959 units). The number of operating large enterprises amounted to 3,576 units, which is 63 units less than in January 2023.

BRAND REGISTRATION

In February, the index of protected trademarks was 0.6942, which means a significant decrease of 30.6% compared to the previous month. In February, 252 trademarks and trade names were registered by legal entities.
